The St. Anthony High School Boys Basketball Team are the IHSA 2017 Class 1A Basketball State Champions. The Bulldogs defeated Hope Academy on Friday 43-34 to advance to the State Championship game. On Saturday the team faced a very resilient Okawville Rockets squad winning in overtime 49-46 to claim their first ever State Championship in Boys Basketball. It is also the first High School Basketball State Championship for the CIty of Effingham.
More than 1000 people attended a welcome home celebration on Sunday, March 12. The team and cheerleaders were honored with a police and fire truck escort through the city ending with a reception at the high school. WXEF's Greg Sapp emceed the program honoring the team. Effingham Mayor, Jeff Bloemker, officially declared St. Anthony Bulldog Day in Effingham. Fans and the team were then treated to pizza and pasta provided by Joe's Pizza and Pasta, ice cream from Homewood Grill, and cake and cupcakes from Martin's catering.
